Alcoholism is a disease in which those afflicted feel they must continue to drink alcoholic beverages regardless of their effects. There are many potential factors that influence the likelihood of becoming an alcoholic.
Genetics
Those related to someone with an alcohol addiction are more likely to be susceptible to alcoholism. In particular, those with parents who are addicted are much more likely to become addicted.
Personality
People with certain personality types, such as those who are shy or anxious, are more likely to use alcohol as a way of interacting without fear. This sort of dependence can lead to alcoholism.
Trauma
Undergoing any sort of physical or mental trauma, including abuse, can lead people to alcohol addiction as a way of getting away from what has happened.
Environment
When placed in an environment where drinking is frequent, a person's likelihood of becoming an alcoholic is increased. The influence of others can cause people to drink and eventually depend on alcohol.
Events
Life events or stressful situations can lead to alcoholism. Those who are undergoing stressful times at work, at home or with loved ones are more likely to turn to alcohol.
