  • Burning sensations on the skin, whether localized or widespread, are often worrisome. If the cause is not apparent, a doctor should be consulted. Fortunately, there are many instances where burning sensations are the result of minor ailments that are easily treated at home.

    Sunburn

Unprotected exposure to the sun can result in a sunburn, which causes a burning sensation and may result in flaking of the skin.

    Friction

Friction due to abrasive clothing, sliding across carpet or a similar action will cause an intense burning sensation for several minutes.

    Heat Rash

Burning skin may be caused by a heat rash, which is different than a sunburn, and often caused by excessive friction in a warm environment.

    Irritant

Glue, paint or some other foreign substance that comes in contact with the skin may cause burning, and should be removed immediately.

    Allergy

Allergic reactions to food, plants, pollen or other substances may cause burning of the skin.
