  • Whether you want to find your computer's RAM manually or use an online scanning program, there are various ways in which you can determine what type of memory your computer is using.

    Online Scanning Programs

OEMPCWorld is an online source in which you can simply choose the "Check Your System" option to auto scan your computer. The program then displays the type of memory found on your computer. This system will not work on Mac computers.

    Manual Web Search

If your computer comes from a big box manufacturer you can find the type of RAM used on the company's website. Go to the website, for example Dell.com and find your computer model. Under the computer's specifications section you will see a spot for "RAM." This section will tell you if you need DDR2 or DDR3 RAM and the type of RAM chip used.

    Computer Manual Search

Most computers from major manufacturers will come with a manual. Look under the memory section for the RAM type. Again, this should be either DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

    Look Inside Your Computer

RAM chip sets print the type of memory on a sticker found on the card. Open your computer and locate the memory stick. If you can not see the sticker, remove the RAM from your computer (first turn your computer off to avoid electrical shorts). See the accompanying picture for an example of a sticker.

    Use An Online Manufacturer Search

4AllMemory allows users to select the manufacturer name and then model number for their desktop and laptops devices. Enter in the required information (includes Mac support), and the type of memory you need will be displayed.
