Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a chronic medical condition that causes abdominal pain and can be managed with preventative measures. Lactose intolerance is an inability to fully digest lactose from diary products and may cause similar symptoms as IBS.
Symptoms in Common
According to the Mayo Clinic, patients with IBS or lactose intolerance may experience abdominal cramps, bloating or gas. Diarrhea and nausea may occur with both of these conditions.
Symptoms Not in Common
Constipation and mucous in stool can occur with IBS but are not commonly associated with lactose intolerance.
Complications of IBS
IBS sufferers may develop malnutrition due to an inability to absorb nutrients in the intestinal tract, and hemorrhoids may also cause further aggravation and discomfort.
Management of IBS
IBS patients should eat at regular times, avoid problem foods and drink plenty of liquids.
Lactose Management
Individuals who are lactose intolerant should use lactose-reduced or lactose-free products instead of dairy products, read the ingredients of foods to find hidden sources of lactose, and seek non-dairy sources of calcium.
