Rubber mulch manufacturers say their product is safe, non-toxic and odorless. Touting the fact that their mulch is made from recycled tires, they conclude that their product is one of the best to use for mulch, as it is long lasting, cost effective and available in a variety of colors. Rubber mulch companies add that their products are environmentally friendly.
On the Other: Gardeners Say Rubber Mulch Isn't Safe
Gardeners have given three main reasons why they feel that rubber mulch is an unsafe alternative. One main problem is that it has been shown to be flammable. The reason for this is that rubber mulch contains petroleum, which is very hard to put out once it ignites. Secondly, it's toxic to humans and to the environment as it leaches chemicals. Finally, if used for a garden, it is destructive. Rubber mulch contains a high level of zinc, which can cause ornamental flowers and vegetables to die.
Bottom Line
Because so many gardeners who have used this material say it is unsafe, it may not be the best mulch material to use. Wood mulches may be a much safer choice.
