With water birth, you spend time during labor and/or deliver your baby in a tub of warm water. According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), water birth has become more popular over the last 30 years. Althoug, there are benefits like a sense of privacy, there are dangers associated with water births.
Umbilical Cord
One danger of water birth is the potential for the umbilical cord to snap or break before your baby is safely out of the water.
Infection
Some infectious diseases, like herpes, quickly pass from you to your infant during a water birth.
Meconium
You infant may inhale or swallow meconium during delivery. This occurs while the baby is still underwater.
Aspiration
According to the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynecologists, there is a danger of water aspiration. For instance, your infant may inhale water into their lungs during delivery.
Embolism
A danger for you is called water embolism. When this occurs water enters your blood stream.
