Prolonged sun exposure creates havoc on the skin. Sunning or tanning in a bed both destroy the skin and create a multitude of problems. Tinea versicolor is a skin condition caused by sun exposure, leaving white spots on the skin.
Versicolor
The word versicolor literally means various colors. Tinea versicolor occurs with prolonged sun exposure. Typically appearing on the chest, shoulders and back, large patches can form.
Course
Tinea versicolor is more commonly found in teenagers. Treatment with prescription lotions and ointments will halt the formation and normal skin usually reappears. Individuals typically outgrow this skin condition and the white patches go away during early adulthood.
Causes
Tinea versicolor is caused by a yeast organism triggered by the sun. High temperatures and humid conditions also work to promote the growth of tinea versicolor.
Treatment
There are soaps and shampoos that are effective for topical treatment. In severe cases, anti-fungal prescription medications in the form of lotions and ointment are useful.
Prevention
The best prevention is to stay out of the sun and keep the skin from becoming overly moist. Tinea versicolor is not contagious or life-threatening.
