  • A Social Security card is important because you need it to get a job and collect Social Security benefits. Many companies, banks and credit companies will ask for a Social Security card for proof of identity. One of the worst feelings you can experience is having the card stolen; the threat of identity theft is a serious problem.

    Call the Federal Trade Commission

Once you realize the card has been stolen, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (1-877-ID-THEFT or 1-877-438-4338). The government will then see if there are any suspicious activities by checking your recent records.

    Replacing the Card

If your card is stolen, it can be replaced for free. Be aware that it may only be replaced three times in one year and 10 times during your lifetime.

    Completing an Application

To get the replacement card, complete the "Application for a Social Security Card" (Form SS-5). Next present a recently issued document to show your identity.

    For the Foreign-Born

Show evidence that you are a United States citizen if you were born outside the country. For those who have noncitizen status, show your papers to prove it.

    New Card Information

The replacement card will have the same name and number as the previous Social Security card.
