Women with HIV exhibit several visible and nonvisible symptoms, which may come and go as the infection lingers and can remain hidden until just before the onset of AIDS. Signs of HIV are similar for men and women, except that women may also experience several gynecological symptoms.
First Symptoms
Women may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, headaches and swollen lymph nodes after a few months of contracting the virus. These early symptoms will eventually subside within a month.
Most Common Symptom
The first symptom seen in women after the initial flu-like symptoms is swollen glands (large lymph nodes).
Symptoms on the Surface
Noticeable symptoms such as weight loss, night sweats, skin rashes, skin blotches on the face and yeast infections in the mouth may occur in HIV-infected women.
Symptoms Within
Symptoms such as fatigue, fever, short-term memory loss, headaches and depression are common symptoms that may not be visible upon first sight.
Woman-specific Symptoms
Women may also experience symptoms of HIV within their vagina and reproductive organs in the form of yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease and sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis or human papillomavirus (HPV). HIV may also stop a woman's menstrual cycle.
