Arm pain can range from minor to extreme and can affect both arms. Left arm pain can be caused by numerous conditions, and understanding them can give you peace of mind or the conviction to see a doctor for treatment.
Poor Circulation
Poor circulation is a common cause of pain, as blood is not reaching your arm in large enough amounts. If your arm also feels cold or numb, poor circulation is likely. Circulation medicine may be needed.
"Sleeping" Arm
An arm that has fallen "asleep" or is "dead" has had a temporarily constricted blood flow. This is often caused by lying on your arm awkwardly or by lack of movement. If the pain is slight or "tingly" your arm is likely asleep.
Cramps
If pain is sudden and concentrated and occurred during a movement it's likely your arm is suffering from a cramp. This typically occurs as a result of straining and can be extremely painful though short-lasting.
Valve Prolapse
If the pain in your arm is accompanied by chest pain, you may have a valve prolapse. This is not a heart attack; it occurs when a heart valve intrudes into the atrium. It is typically treated with antibiotics.
Heart Attack
Many people assume they are having a heart attack when they are suffering from left arm pain. This is only true if your left arm pain is accompanied by extreme and persistent chest pain, dizziness and confusion.
