Bamboo has become a popular choice for furniture, flooring and decor. Because bamboo is a grass, tables and chairs made with bamboo are different than conventional wood furnishings.
Definition
Bamboo is a perennial evergreen plant and is a member of the Poaceae grass family. The center stalk is most often used in furniture-making, and can be noted by ridges or spaced nodes on the texture of the material. Preserved bamboo is a durable but lightweight alternative to traditional wood.
Process
When bamboo is cut for furniture, replacement plants grow quickly. Bamboo can be cut or molded into furniture shapes, and can be finished with a lacquer or left with the hard tan grain exposed.
Furniture
Nearly any furniture that is commonly made of wood can be made from bamboo. Chairs, beds, tables, desks and bars can all be made from bamboo, and are lighter and just as durable as hard or softwood furnishings.
Use
Bamboo furniture is most frequently used in Asian-themed decor, as the plant is often associated with Japanese culture, though professional interior designers use bamboo in several modern applications.
Benefits
Because bamboo is a fast growing natural resource, many people are turning to bamboo as an alternative to the deforestation present in wood furnishing manufacturing.
