A godchild is normally an infant, but can be an adult who is sponsored by an adult at baptism. Baptisms are the ritual act in which the child accepts God.

Godparent Qualifications
Godparents should be of the same religion as the child getting baptized, since they are to assist the parents in her spiritual raising.
Duties
A godparent is to make a profession of faith during the baptismal ceremony for the one to be baptized and to thereafter assume perpetual guardianship over the child and instruct him of the obligations of the Christian life. The obligation binds only when the parents neglect to do their duty or die. In modern times, the role of a godparent has come to mean that the individual takes a vested interest in the well-being and raising of the child.
Decision
The parents of the child choose the godparent or godparents. They can have only one or a person of each sex.
Tenure
Godparents keep their responsibilities for life.
