<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Schlage Is Regarded as Superior
In the locksmithing community, this question isn't even open for debate. Schlage is a longtime favorite and provides a wide range of products at varying levels of security. Schlage even offers high-end locks on the same level as those used in banks.
On the Other: Buyer Beware
The company Dexter was purchased by Schlage, which has led to some confusion on the part of consumers. While Schlage has ownership of the company, Dexter still retains all its original manufacturing facilities and procedures. Therefore, in the opinion of many locksmiths, their locks are not up to the standard of Schlage's.
Bottom Line
If pricing is your main concern, there are options on either side of the fence. Appending cheaper models of Dexter locks may be convenient in a building already equipped with Schlage locks, as Dexter locks can be keyed to Schlage. However, if you ask someone who's been in the business for a while, they'll probably tell you to stick with Schlage.
