The Facts
Imitrex can be taken at the onset of a migraine. A second dose may be required, but you must wait two hours before taking it.
Considerations
Imitrex is not a preventive or long-term medication. It will not stop a migraine from coming but will effectively treat one that has already shown symptoms.
Side Effects
Some reported side effects include dizziness, tightness in the chest, fatigue, nausea, tingling and flushing. Please discuss all side effects with your doctor. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek immediate help.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose from Imitrex, call the nearest emergency room or poison control center right away. It is recommended you be monitored for at least 12 hours or until symptoms disappear.
Warning
Serotonin syndrome can be caused by Imitrex, especially when combined with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). If you are currently taking an SSRI or SNRI, allow your doctor to evaluate the risk and closely monitor your care.This possibility increases based on your dose and frequency of use.
