  • An insect bite or sting can result in a serious allergic reaction. It is important to determine the severity of the reaction and act accordingly. Sometimes it is appropriate to treat yourself with over-the-counter or home remedies and other times it is necessary to seek a physician.

    Causes

Bites by fleas and ants or stings by bees and wasps may introduce insect venom into the body. Allergic reactions result when the recipient's immune system produces antibodies that actually injure surrounding cells instead of healing them.

    Symptoms

Mild symptoms like itching or swelling around the affected area may occur. In serious cases, wheezing, congestion, palpitations, loss of consciousness and even death may occur due to a dangerous condition called anaphylaxis.

    Anaphylactic Shock

Someone with anaphylaxis who is bitten or stung may go into anaphylactic shock. This is a life-threatening allergic reaction that must be treated as a medical emergency.

    Treatment for Mild Reactions

Remove the stinger and wash the area of sting or bite. Calamine lotion or over-the-counter antihistamines or corticosteroid creams may also be used to ease swelling and discomfort.

    Treatment for Serious Reactions

If someone you are with is experiencing anaphylactic shock, call 911 and begin CPR if the victim is no longer breathing. Anyone who knows he is allergic to insect venom should carry an injection of epinephrine. If this is the case, administer an injection and wait for medical assistance to arrive.

    Preventions

To help avoid being bitten or stung, wear protective clothing, avoid use of flowery perfumes or colognes and stay away from areas where garbage has accumulated.
