An intensely moisturizing mixture of fats from the sheep of a skin, lanolin is a favored choice for treating dry skin as well as other skin ailments among health care professionals and those looking for soothing at-home relief.
Significance
Lanolin is a mixture of natural fatty oils from the skin of sheep and water. It has a chemical composition similar to that of the oils produced by human skin, making it useful as a remedy for skincare problems.
Identification
Lanolin is a waxy substance that is thick and creamy, pale yellow, and has a distinct odor.
Uses
Minor burns and diaper rash, as well as skin that is dry, scaly, itchy and rough are treated or prevented by applying lanolin. Breastfeeding mothers also use lanolin to treat and sooth their sore or cracked nipples.
Effects
Lanolin forms an oily layer on the top of skin, creating a barrier that holds in moisture, resulting in skin that is softer and smoother.
Warnings
Swelling and redness or a rash may appear where lanolin is applied, in a matter of hours or days, if you have an allergic reaction to the wool alcohols in lanolin. In this case, stop using lanolin immediately.
