Costa Rica is home to an outstanding array of wildlife. Over a quarter of Costa Rica's land is protected to conserve the plants and animals found throughout its rain forests, rivers, mountains and coasts.
Turtles
Several species of turtle spawn on the beaches of Costa Rica. These include leatherback turtles, who lay their eggs in Las Baulas National Park, and green turtles, who spawn annually in the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge.
Monkeys
Titi is the local name for the spider monkey, which lives in Manuel Antonio National Park near the Costa Rica-Panama border. The Central American squirrel monkey and white-faced capuchin are also found in Costa Rica.
Cats
There are six cat species in Costa Rica, including ocelots, jaguars and margays.
Birds
Over 850 species of birds have been recorded in Costa Rica. Some of the most interesting include the quetzal, often seen around Barva Volcano, and the instantly recognizable scarlet macaw.
Marine Species
The reefs of Cahuita National Park are home to many corals and tropical fish species. Sting rays, American crocodiles and bull sharks live in the waters off Corcovado National Park.
Trees
A wide variety of trees thrive in Costa Rica. The country's wooded areas include evergreen forests, mangrove swamps and rain forests.
