With type 1 diabetes, the body no longer has the ability to produce insulin. Insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas, is necessary to move blood sugar (or glucose) to the cells for energy. Type 1 diabetics must receive treatment to survive.
Insulin
Individuals with type 1 diabetes need daily insulin injections, either via needles or an insulin pump, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Food
To prevent blood sugar from becoming to high or low, diabetics must eat a well-balanced diet. Eating meals at the same time each day also helps.
Self-monitoring
The easiest way for a doctor to see how the body progresses with type 1 diabetes is through home blood-glucose monitoring.
Medication
Although insulin is the primary treatment for type 1 diabetes, some people take medications to prevent common, related complications, such as kidney and eye disease.
Footwear
Type 1 diabetics often experience damaged blood vessels, especially in the feet. Special diabetic shoes help prevent cuts or sores from appearing and developing into more serious ulcers.
