  • The rubber stamp is a carved image on a sheet of rubber that is usually mounted on wood. But don't let its simplicity fool you. Our rubbery friend has a little more to tell than you might think.

    Primary Use

Press a rubber stamp into a coloring agent such as ink and then press it on paper or other printable surface and see the stamp's image transferred. Do this repeatedly and you have an inexpensive duplicating device.

    Origin

South Americans first used rubber to stamp themselves with temporary tattoos. The first record we have of mounted rubber stamp use dates to 1866 when a man mounted rubber on wood to stamp bathtubs.

    Types

Adjustable date rubber stamps mark due dates on library materials while self-inking stamps often transfer corporate logos to documents. Art rubber stamps help decorate scrapbooks, stationery and other materials.

    Industry

Rubber stamp makers own their own trade magazine called "Marking Industry Magazine" and reported $13,701,566 in sales for 2008.

    Fun Fact

The world's largest rubber stamp is an Ohio landmark thanks to Standard Oil of Ohio which commissioned the stamp in 1985.
