HGH, short for human growth hormone, occurs naturally in the human body through the pituitary gland--located at the base of the brain. Synthetic HGH is available and usually is only beneficial to those who truly need it.
Function
The HGH produced in the pituitary gland helps the body grow as it goes through puberty. After puberty, it helps boost the immune system, regrow cells, lose weight and strengthen bones.
Benefits
Taking HGH injections or supplements helps the body retain muscle mass--vitally important for AIDS and HIV patients. In addition, it can help an athlete's overall performance.
Misconceptions
Although HGH increases the size of muscles, it does not necessarily improve actual strength, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Types
Only HGH injections taken from the bodies of deceased individuals contain pure HGH. HGH supplements use a chemical that induces HGH production in the pituitary gland. Although HGH supplements are less effective, they are much cheaper and have fewer side effects than injections.
Side Effects
The use of HGH may lead to inflammation in the arms and legs, aches in the joints and muscles, and increased breast size in men. The Mayo Clinic also advises that HGH sometimes results in a greater risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Considerations
HGH therapy may help people lose weight and fight the effects of aging, but people should consider healthy living options, such as a good diet and exercise, with their doctor before choosing to take this product.
