Chemists create nearly any liquid fragrance by combining alcohol, water and various amounts of essential oils to give it a characteristic scent. According to the website of cosmetic discount giant Beauty Encounter, eau de toilette, or EDT, contains 7 percent essential oils and lasts up to two hours without reapplication. Eau de cologne contains about 3 percent essential oils and lasts up to one hour.

On the Other: Layering with Cologne

It seems reasonable to assume that EDT lasts longer throughout the day because it is more concentrated than cologne. A woman can achieve an alluring depth to her fragrance, however, by layering cologne with other forms of the same scent, such as a shower gel, body powder and lotion. The scent will softly envelop her all day long without having to be reapplied as often.

    Bottom Line

Although EDT contains more essential oils than cologne, cologne has greater staying power when combined with bath products in the line. Of course, a woman can also layer EDT to achieve the longest lasting version of a scent without overpowering others nearby.
