A lung perfusionist--also known as a cardio-pulmonary perfusionist or, more simply, a perfusionist--regulates the vital supply of blood to a patient's heart and lungs during surgery. There are many side tasks involved in accomplishing that main goal.
The Heart-Lung Machine
The perfusionist sets up a heart-lung machine and makes sure it operates properly before a surgical procedure begins.
Patient History
A perfusionist reviews a patient's medical history for any indication that she may have trouble or experience respiratory failure during the surgical procedure.
Drugs and Anesthesia
The perfusionist attaches the patient to the heart-lung machine and administers the appropriate drugs and anesthetic agents to prepare the patient for surgery.
Respiration and Circulation
During the surgical procedure, the perfusionist monitors the patient's blood supply and respiration rate.
Emergencies
If the patient experiences a respiratory or cardiac emergency during the procedure, the perfusionist makes adjustments on the heart-lung machine in an attempt to help the patient recover.
