U.S. citizens planning to travel to China must have a visa. These can be obtained by either applying at the embassy or a consulate, or using a visa service.
Applying for a Visa
Applications for tourist (L) visas must be presented in person at the embassy or one of its consulates. If you cannot apply in person, a visa service will submit the application for you.
Where to Apply
The Chinese Embassy is located in Washington, D.C. Consulates are located around the United States; the embassy maintains a list on its website that tells which consulate a person should use.
Visa Services
Visa services, such as the Chinese Service Center of America, will hand-carry your application to the embassy or consulate. Visa services charge fees for doing this.
Visa Application Form
The embassy, consulates, and online visa services have printable visa application forms on their websites.
Other Requirements
Travelers will need to submit a 2-inch by 2-inch photo with the application, as well as the passport. The passport must be good at least six months after the expected return date from China, the embassy reports.
