Beta strep can result in a potentially serious illness. Pregnant women in particular are vulnerable to beta strep. If it is transmitted to the baby, the baby may become seriously ill. Infant mortality is possible.
Identification
Beta strep is a common name for group B streptococcus, also called GBS. It is a type of common bacteria.
Location
Unlike the bacteria that results in a strep throat, beta strep tends to be located in the rectum or vagina. However, it may also result in an infection of the kidneys, uterus, bladder and occasionally the brain (known as meningitis).
Misconceptions
Beta strep does not always cause an infection; some adults can have it without getting sick.
Considerations
According to the University of Michigan Health System, as many as 10 to 30 percent of women who are pregnant harbor GBS bacteria.
Treatment
Beta strep tends to respond well to antibiotic treatment. However, pregnant women who have the bacteria but do not have an active infection may not be treated with antibiotics until they are in labor.
