  • The Kindle is a remarkable gadget that can store and wirelessly download books, newspapers, magazines, blogs and personal documents. The same wireless connection that allows users to download reading material also allows users to access the Internet. Using this connection, users can browse websites and check their email.

    Wireless Access

Amazon provides a free wireless Internet connection called Whispernet to use for downloading and shopping in the Amazon Kindle Store. The wireless connection can also be used for browsing the Internet . This feature is an experimental application, and it works best with text-based websites . To access the Internet on a Kindle, first make sure Whispernet is turned on by going to the "Home" screen and pushing the "Menu" button. If the top of the "Menu" list says, "Turn Wireless On," select this item. (Note: Some areas are outside of Whispernet's coverage. See "Kindle Coverage Tool" in the reference list for more information.) From here, accessing the Internet on the Kindle is easy. Stay on the "Home" screen, and select "Experimental" from the "Menu" list. Another screen will present an option called "Basic Web." Select it. This will open the Internet.

    Navigating

After you are in "Basic Web," push "Menu" and select "Enter URL" from the list. The cursor will move directly to the web address field. Type www.gmail.com into the field and press "Enter" or use the 5-way controller to select "Go To." At the Gmail homepage, use the 5-way controller to navigate to the fields for username and password and enter them as usual. Press "Enter" and your Inbox will load. It will look more cramped than on a computer screen, but all features and folders will be present. Navigate Gmail on the Kindle as you would a book---use "Next Page" or "Back" to browse your messages, and select links using the 5-way controller.

    Tips

Like many websites, Gmail has a mobile version, which is compatible with cell phones and other devices with small screens. It can be reached at m.gmail.com. Using this version of Gmail will give users a cleaner-looking Inbox. There are no graphics, just a list of messages. To access a folder other than the Inbox from the mobile version of Gmail, press the "Next Page" button until you reach the end of the Inbox. At the end of this page, there will be link to all other folders, including Compose Mail, Sent Mail, Drafts and Trash. When finished with Gmail, users can sign out using the link at the very bottom of the final Inbox page.
