The thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, makes hormones that control the rate of cell functions in your body. An enlarged thyroid is a concern because of the possibility of cancer or a change in the amount of hormones the thyroid produces.
Iodine Deficiency
An enlarged thyroid can be caused by a lack of iodine in your diet. However, this is rare in well-developed countries because iodine is included in table salt among other things.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid is not producing enough hormones.
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid is producing too much of the hormones.
Autoimmune Thyroid Disease
Autoimmune thyroid disease is when the body's immune system attacks the thyroid. Graves' disease and Hashimoto's disease are the two most common types of autoimmune thyroid disease.
Thyroid Nodules
Thyroid nodules are growths on the thyroid that are usually benign. Only about 5 to 10 percent are malignant.
Thyroid Cancer
Cancerous nodules are harder than other nodules. There usually are no other symptoms until the cancer spreads throughout the body and becomes life threatening.
