You wake up, walk over to the sink and dare to look yourself in the face. Those dark circles under your eyes make you regret not getting to bed a little earlier. However, your dark circles could be a symptom of more than just lack of sleep.
Allergies
Your dark circles could be allergic shiners. When your sinuses are blocked, the veins around your eyes become congested making them swell and show through the skin as dark circles.
Genetics
Dark circles tend to run in families. Your grandmother's prominent veins and your mother's thin skin could be the original culprits.
Pigmentation
Irregular skin pigmentation is sometimes a cause for dark under-eye circles. This is especially common among Asians and African Americans.
Aging
As you age your skin grows thinner. That thinner skin tends to be a window to the veins behind the skin, resulting in dark circles.
Poor Nutrition
When your body doesn't get the nutrients it needs, the eyes show it. Nutrition and lifestyle coach Sara Cook recommends eating more protein and whole grains and eating less simple carbohydrates to help prevent dark circles under your eyes.
