<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: A Caffeine Boost
The main ingredient in Monster energry drinks is caffeine, which is a well-known stimulant that can temporarily increase your energy level and help you stay awake. A 2009 study conducted by the "Augusta Chronicle" determined that Monster provided more energy than other brands of energy drink such as Red Bull or Rock Star. Monster also contains vitamins B and C and supplements like ginseng, which can decrease stress and raise energy levels.
On the Other: The Inevitable Crash
A 2009 study in the "Annals of Emergency Medicine" showed that Monster has no effect on athletic performance or reaction time, and will not increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Also, keep in mind that the regular formula of Monster contains 26 grams of sugar in one can. While ingesting that amount of sugar will give you energy initially, it will lead to an inevitable "crash" or slowdown hours later. Also, high caffeine levels can cause jitteriness and high blood pressure.
Bottom Line
If you're taking large amounts of caffeine to stay awake, Monster will help you. If you're drinking it to increase performance or reaction time, it won't. Overall, says Mayo Clinic nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky, your best bet is always to get adequate rest and exercise, as well as consuming a nutritious diet.
