The Mayo Clinic calls chest wall pain "one of the most common varieties of harmless chest pain." The cause of chest pain can often go undiagnosed, while at other times it is the precursor to significant problems.
Trauma
The National Lung Health Education Program says trauma is the most common cause of chest wall pain. This pain usually occurs shortly after a fall or other accident.
Strains and Fractures
From time to time, chest wall pain is caused by muscle strains or tears or rib fractures that result from exercise or strenuous coughing.
Costochondritis
A common type of chest wall pain is costochondritis. With costochondritis, the slightest touch causes pain due to irritation of the cartilage between your ribs and breastbone. This type of pain is hardly ever indicative of something serious.
Digestive Problems
Digestive issues, such as a peptic ulcer or acid reflux, often cause chest wall pain that mimics the feel of heart attack pain.
Anxiety
Sudden anxiety, with rapid breathing, can also cause chest wall pain, according to doctors at the Mayo Clinic.
