  • It used to be when you bought a new phone, you customarily would spend hours transferring your phone numbers from one phone to the other. Now, with SIM cards and third-party applications, it's easy to transfer your information with minimal effort. If you are contemplating the best way to move your phone numbers over, there are two easy answers.

    SIM Cards

With the invention of SIM cards, transferring your phone numbers is usually as simple as putting the card from your old phone into your new one. While this option doesn't store ringtones or other files, the SIM card can hold all of your phone numbers so that when you switch phones, it can read read the card and automatically put all of your contacts into the address book. When phone companies say they will automatically switch over all of your contacts, this is normally the process that they use; unfortunately, some companies will also charge for this service.

    Third-Party Applications

Many software programs use the USB and BlueTooth capabilities of your phone and will display all of the contents of your phone's hard drive for you to save onto your computer. These programs, such as BitPim and Dialed In, allow you to drag and drop your phone information into a computer folder and then drag and drop the contents back into the new phone's folders. There are several of these programs available, although many support only certain phones. Do a web search to find a program that's compatible with your phone.
