The human body is made up of eleven distinct systems. More than just bones, the skeletal system is characterized with ligaments and cartilage and tendons. (Book Rags) The skeletal system serves five important functions for the body.
Support
The skeleton provides the frame for the body and gives the human body its shape. The bones also provide an anchoring point for the muscles.
Protection
The skeleton helps to protect many of the body's vital organs. The ribcage specifically protects the heart and lungs, and the skull protects the brain.
Movement
The muscular system and skeleton system work hand in hand to provide movement for the body; when the muscles contract the bones move.
Storage of Minerals
Bones house minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, which can be released into the blood. Osteoporosis, the deficiency of calcium in the bones, can cause bones to become porous and brittle. (Mayo Clinic)
Blood Cell Production
The inner portion of the bone, called the spongy bone, is where the marrow is housed. Red bone marrow is where the red blood cells are formed. Yellow marrow is where fat is stored. Most of adult's red bone marrow is located in the femur and humerus bones.
