  • Yohimbe is a type of tree that grows in the central western regions of Africa. Dietary supplements are commonly sold that contain an extract from the yohimbe tree for use as a natural remedy for a number of medical conditions.

    Function

Yohimbe HCL stimulates the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. This stimulation causes the release of a chemical known as norepinephrine, which increases blood flow throughout the body, including to the penis, according to Salisbury University.

    Use

Herbalists recommend yohimbe HCL for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, decreased libido due to some types of prescription medications, exhaustion, chest pain and depression, reports RxList.

    Drug Interactions

Yohimbe HCL has the potential to cause severe side effects when combined with prescription antidepressant medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including phenelzine, reports RxList. When combined with tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline and imipramine, yohimbe HCL may cause heart problems.

    Side Effects

Potential side effects of yohimbe HCL include upset stomach, vomiting, dizziness, headache, nervousness, irritability, shaking anxiety, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure and flushing, warns the Physicians Desktop Reference. Yohimbe HCL also causes allergic reactions like chest pain, shortness of breath and hives in some patients.

    Considerations

Yohimbe HCL is not safe for use by women, children or people over the age of 65, warns the Physicians Desktop Reference. If you have a history of schizophrenia or other mental illness, prostate problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, liver or kidney disease, high or low blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety or diabetes, it may not be safe to take yohimbe HCL, cautions RxList.
