  • A common question asked by computer users when they upgrade their accounts is "how can I use my programs on my new computer?" The problem Solidwork users run into is an invalid serial number when they try to input it into the setup of the program on their new computer. This isn't an accident; the 3D CAD programmers do this for a reason. To remedy the situation, you need to hook that old computer back up before you can install the program on the new machine.

    Finding Your Serial Number

Return to your old computer and open SolidWorks. The program will only allow one copy of your license to be used, which is why you cannot use your serial number multiple times. Go to "Help" and then "Transfer Licenses". Make sure that this computer is connected to the Internet and send your license back over to the Solidworks website. This will leave your copy of Solidworks inoperable on this computer because it will no longer have a license. You can either uninstall the program, or if you have no more use for the computer, simply shut it off and return to your new computer.

    Inputting Your Serial Number

Open up the install of Solidworks on the new computer. Allow setup to complete and when it reaches the step where it asks for your serial number, input the serial number from your copy of Solidworks. This time, Solidworks will accept it and move on with the installation of the program without any problems. This happens because Solidworks will now recognize it as an unused copy of their program because you transferred the license back to the company.
