Amitiza contains the medication lubiprostone, which is available only with a doctor's prescription. The drug functions as a laxative, making it useful for the treatment of constipation due to some chronic medical conditions.
Function
Amitiza works by activating certain receptors or spots inside of your intestines, causing them to secrete a fluid that contains the mineral chloride.
Effects
The chloride-rich intestinal secretions caused by Amitiza increase the movements of your intestines, making it easier for waste to pass through to your colon, where it eventually is released from your rectum as stool.
Uses
Doctors prescribe Amitiza for the treatment of constipation in women who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as well as for constipation in adults that has no specific medical cause.
Features
For IBS, doctors typically prescribe 8 mcg of Amitiza twice per day, while for constipation with no specific cause, the recommended dosage is 24 mcg twice per day, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Doctors recommend taking Amitiza with food and water.
Considerations
Because its effects upon fetal development are unknown, doctors rarely prescribe Amitiza for use by pregnant women. If you have a history of bowel blockage or severe diarrhea, it may not be safe for you to take Amitiza, cautions the Mayo Clinic.
