Indian bitter melon (Momordica charantia), also known as bitter melon or bitter gourd, is part of the Cucurbitaceae family. This extraordinary fruit has many culinary and medicinal purposes.
Description
The Indian bitter melon is actually part of the squash family. It resembles a cucumber, with bumpy green skin when first picked. When it ripens, the skin turns yellow-orange. The inside contains many seeds.
Location
The Indian bitter melon grows in tropical areas of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America.
Culinary Uses
Indian bitter melon is frequently pickled, curried and stuffed. It can be used in soups and stir-fry. Garlic or chili powder is used in recipes to offset the bitter flavor. Indian bitter melon can also be boiled to reduce bitterness.
