Human skin is a complex organ that requires complex care. This is never more true than when it is cut or damaged. The healing process involves the constriction of blood vessels to stop bleeding, blood clotting, collagen formation and new cell growth. It is important that you take proper care of your skin for these things to occur quickly and without interruption.
Types of Wounds
The two main types of wounds to the skin are abrasions and incised wounds. Abrasions are scrapes along the surface layer, which is called the epidermis. Incised wounds are caused by sharp objects and often penetrate the deeper layer of your skin, which is called the dermis.
Moisture
Keeping an abrasion or cut moist can hurry the healing process. This is because healing requires cell growth and blood flow, two things that can occur faster in a moist environment. Applying an oil-based moisturizer allows your body's natural moisture to stay inside the wound.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are necessary to prevent infection. A good, oil-based antibiotic ointment can provide moisture as well.
Nutrition
Any injury to your body will heal better if you eat well. Fruits and vegetables are always better than fries and shakes.
Scabs
Never pick at a scab; doing so can produce terrible scarring. You can make a scab heal and fall off faster by keeping it moist with an oil-based, antibiotic ointment.
