Since the 1970s, the International Bird Rescue Research Center has been using Ultra Dawn dish-washing liquid to remove spilled oil from birds and mammals caught up in oil spills. Alice Berkner, who founded the center, informally researched which dish soap best cleaned oil by comparing different soaps and cleaning products. She found that Ultra Dawn worked best because it works quickly to clean and can rinse quickly as well.

On the Other: Other Soaps Unproven

Enviro-One, a green dish-washing liquid, advertises that it cleans oil spills quickly and efficiently by simply spraying the area affected, waiting and then wiping up the area. This method may work for clothing, but for birds and mammals the spray-and-wait method would take too much time, according to the experts at the center.

    Bottom Line

Whether cleaning up clothes after changing the oil in a car or helping at a large rescue operation, it makes sense to use the dish soap the experts use. In the case of oil spills, that is Ultra Dawn. Although other dish soaps have been tested, Ultra Dawn is still being used to help the wildlife caught up in oil spills.
