  • Choosing a method of treatment for alcohol addiction can be very difficult for the patient and their family. Knowing the types of treatment is helpful in selecting the one that is right for you.

    Severity

Alcohol addiction can vary in severity from a mental addiction to one that manifests in physical symptoms. Mental addictions can often be treated on an outpatient basis or through counseling. Alcoholics that drink heavily for an extended period can experience tremors in their limbs, nausea, vomiting, fever and insomnia while their bodies experience detoxification.

    Residential

Residential rehabilitation treatment involves living at a treatment center. Patients undergo counseling and abstain from alcohol during the period of treatment. Programs generally last 30 to 90 days.

    Hospitalization

Alcohol addiction can be treated in a hospital by admitting the patient intermittently to assess progress and monitor the detoxification process. Partial hospitalization can be an effective treatment for those with stable home environments.

    Counseling

Counseling can help alcoholics identify the psychological and physical reasons for drinking in an effort to correct the issues. Counseling can be done in a group or on an individual basis and usually works best in conjunction with another rehabilitation method.

    Group

Some individuals with alcohol addiction opt to join a support group such as Alcoholics Anonymous to discuss problems in their lives and to prevent relapse.
