A lump in the breast is a common cause for concern when it is discovered, since it could be a sign of disease. However, there are numerous causes for a breast lump, and most are totally harmless.
Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the biggest concern when a lump is found. It is fatal if it is not treated in time, so any breast lump should be examined by a doctor.
Cysts
Cysts are fluid-filled sacs in the breast that usually don't require any treatment and often go away when you go through menopause.
Fibroadenoma
A fibroadenoma is a benign tumor that is rubbery or hard with a well-defined shape. It moves easily when touched and usually doesn't hurt. It may need to be monitored for changes or removed surgically.
Lipoma
A lipoma can be found anywhere on the body, including breasts. It is a fatty benign tumor just underneath the skin. Lipomas are most often detected in middle age.
Itraductal Papilloma
An intraductal papilloma is a small growth inside a milk duct in the breast. It usually is near the areola in middle-aged women. It usually is harmless and may often cause a watery, pink discharge, which is also a symptom of breast cancer.
