  • Sea urchins are small animals that can be found in any ocean. Sea urchins are members of the Echinoidea class and somewhat resemble smell hedgehogs or porcupines because of their spiky appearance.

    Appendages

Sea urchins do not have arms or legs, but instead have multiple spines that shoot out to look like them. These spines serve as camouflage and help to defend the sea urchin.

    Food

Sea urchins primarily feed on algae, sea grasses and any decaying organic matter that is near them on the ocean floor.

    Reproduction

Rather than mating, male sea urchins release their sperm into the ocean and female sea urchins do the same with their eggs. When the two combine, they create new sea urchins.

    Home

Sea urchins live in the mid-to-low levels of tide pools, and they like to be near hard surfaces where they can feast on algae or seaweed.

    Characteristics

Usually around four inches long, sea urchins are usually a pink or purple hue, but can embody other colors. On their undersides, sea urchins have five teeth and hundreds of small feet for moving.
