Stretch marks are wavy stripes on the skin that can appear on the buttocks, breasts, thighs, or stomach. Although they pose no health risks, they are often an annoyance for those that suffer from them. Consider these treatments to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
Topical Treatments
Shea butter is oil extracted from the seed of the African Karite tree and is used as a skin moisturizer. Liberal application of raw Shea butter dramatically improves and smooths stretch marks. (Reference 1)
Medical Treatments
Laser therapy is a possible solution for stretch marks. According to lastertreatments.com, "lasers are used to stimulate new collagen growth and fill the stretch marks from the bottom up." (Reference 2)
Cause
Stretch marks appear when the skin becomes overstretched and the fibers deep within the skin tear. This is normally due to rapid weight gain/loss or pregnancy.
Prevention
Stretch marks can be prevented if measures are taken before they appear. Do not scratch or rub the places where stretch marks normally appear. Daily, apply a topical solution of vitamin A and vitamin E liquid, this will help moisturize and improve the skin's elasticity.
Considerations
Phyllis Balch, CNC, Author of "The Prescription for Nutritional Healing" warns that "once stretch marks appear, they are permanent, but they do become much less noticeable with time." (Reference 3)
