Glass is nonabsorbent, making mixing paints on the surface a snap. There are several companies that make palettes out of tempered safety glass, which doesn't break easily. Glass palettes are easy to clean and at around $25 on-line or in art supply stores not overly expensive. You can also make your own glass palette. Artist Julia Holmes says glass is one of the best materials for a palette.

On the Other: There are Drawbacks to Glass Palettes

While commercially produced palettes are made of safety glass, they can still break if they fall on a hard surface. If you make your own glass palettes, for example from old window panes, they're likely to be even more easily breakable.

    Bottom Line

Glass is a tremendous material to use for a palette. Its hard, flat, very smooth surface makes mixing paints easy. Old window panes can actually be cut with a glass cutter, ground with a sharpening stone, and even backed with foam board to form a useful glass palette. You can also buy commercially made tempered glass palettes. The drawbacks of glass are that even a tempered glass palette will break if it lands on something hard, and homemade glass palettes can be sharp if you don't remember to grind the edges.
