  • There are 11 systems of the body which work together. The skeletal system is made up of bones, tendons and ligaments, and helps to frame the body.

    Importance

The skeletal system protects the vital organs of the body from harm. The cranium protects the brain and the rib cage protects the heart.

    Considerations

The skeleton gives our body its shape, and differentiates us between other animals. Muscles are attached to bone, when a muscles moves it prompts the bone to move as well.

    Facts

The adult human body will have 206 bones, 22 of those bones are located in the head. Children have fewer bones, and more cartilage, because their bodies have not finished growing yet. The average person stops growing around age 25.

    Types

There are six different types of bones. Long bones are usually curved. Short bones are commonly as long as they are wide. Flat bones commonly protect organs. Irregular bones have complicated shapes. Sesamoid bones may turn into tendons when exposed to extreme stress. Sutural bones are located in the cranium.

    Structure

Bones are made of compact and spongy tissue. The compact portion of the bone is the outer side and is very hard. The inner portion of the bone is spongy or cancellous, it is where the marrow is located. Red blood cells are formed in the red bone marrow, fat is stored in the yellow marrow.
