  • A hot toddy refers to a hot mixed drink, which usually includes alcohol. Traditionally, hot toddies are drunk before bed and in cold weather.

    History

"Toddy" comes from an Indian drink of the same name, made from the sap of palm trees. It is believed that the name was then introduced to Europe by way of the East India Trading Company.

    Uses

Hot toddies were once thought to have remedial properties, and were used to treat the common cold and flu. While the drink does little to cure a cold, the combination of heat, lemon, and the anti-inflammatory properties of alcohol can provide some relief from symptoms.

    Common Ingredients

A hot toddy is traditionally made with cinnamon sticks, lemon peel, honey, cloves and bourbon, although whiskey is a popular alternative.

    Preparation

Steep ingredients in boiled water until the honey is melted. Add two tbsp. of bourbon to each mug.

    Warning

Hot toddies are no longer considered by the medical community as a suitable treatment for the common cold. Also, drinking alcohol can cause dehydration and in fact worsen the symptoms of a cold.
