Are the fittings on a propane tank for a gas barbecue grill universal?

Official Know-It-All

Since 2000, propane tanks have been required to have a Quick Closing Coupling (QCC), an internal valve that helps prevent leaks. These tanks have an internal thread for standard POL grill fittings and an external thread for the large nut used on newer grills. Older tanks only have the POL fitting.
