Argosy University (named after the term for a flotilla of merchant ships) is a higher education institution founded in 2001, which exists both in bricks-and-mortar form and online. They offer undergraduate and graduate programs in several areas of study.
History
Three separate institutions merged to form Argosy University--the American School of Professonal Psychology, the University of Sarasota and the Medical Institute of Minnesota. The three aimed to create a psychology degree program that emphasized practical training.
Geography
Argosy is now located on 19 different campuses across the U.S, and offers online degree programs through its Chicago branch. Degrees available online use the same curriculum as those at Argosy's campus locations.
Divisions
The university continues to emphasize the study of psychology, but has since branched out to include four separate divisions: the College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Health Sciences.
Features
Argosy offers master's and doctoral degrees, and has one of the largest populations of graduate students in the nation. In addition, Argosy offers bachelor's and associate's degrees in the fields of psychology, business and health sciences.
Misconceptions
Argosy, unlike many institutions with online offerings, is not a "degree mill." In 2010, Argosy University was awarded a seven-year extension of its accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission, the official regional accreditation organization for the Midwestern and Southern U.S.
