Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plants and animals that have been altered in some way through genetic engineering. Scientists and agriculturalists work with GMOs to make products and crops that are better tasting, grow faster and are more environmentally friendly.
Crops
The U.S. Department of Energy's Human Genome Project claims that crops that have been genetically modified have shorter maturation periods, better taste and quality, increased nutritional value and are able to withstand pests and crop disease.
Animals
The 2008 edition of "Nature Education" states that animals that are genetically modified are better able to resist disease and can produce a greater yield of products such as meat, eggs and milk.
Environment
Benefits to the environment from GMOs include the conservation of resources such as water and soil and the use of "green" insecticides and herbicides.
Medical Research
GMOs are used in medical and pharmaceutical research and can help lead to the development of vaccines and antibodies.
Miscellaneous
If developed and used properly, GMOs can economically benefit producers and consumers. They can also help alleviate hunger problems in all nations.
