Traction is a pulling or lifting force on the body or tension created by the force. This is often used on the neck to relieve pain or help bones heal and can be done in various ways.
Halo Brace
A halo brace immobilizes the neck as well as places traction on the neck. It uses metal arms connected to pins sticking out of the side of the top of the head and to a vest worn by the patient.
Other Devices
Other devices relieve pain by reducing downward or compressing stress placed on the neck and allowing increased blood flow to the discs in the neck.
History
The first devices relieved pain with traction using a strap under the chin connected to a pulley. Someone pulled on the pulley or it would be weighted to provide traction.
Newer Devices
Newer devices use collars that are pumped up with air. As the collar inflates, it pushes up on the jaw and base of the skull to provide traction.
Curvature Adjustment
Another form of traction on the neck is to push on the back of it to give the neck its proper curvature. Pillows with humps are used for this by lying on them with the neck resting on the hump.
