Disc jockeys (DJs) use laptop computers, rather than turntables or CD players, to play music because of the many advantages this provides in planning and during a gig.
Planning
A DJ can set up her laptop in advance of the gig with all of her music and a set of pre-created playlists for any mood or occasion.
Playback
Laptops can be hooked up to speakers directly, just like a CD player or turntable. Media player programs switch easily between songs, even providing cross-fading and other playback features. Playlists can be updated on the fly.
Storage and Portability
A DJ can store much more music on a laptop than in a box or binder of CDs or records, and the laptop has the benefit of also being the playback device.
Backups
Storing music on a laptop in addition to CD form allows for backups in case either the CDs or the computer are stolen or damaged.
Internet Access
A laptop connected to the Internet allows a DJ to download new music rather than going to a store or waiting for promotional material to be sent to him. He can even download music as he plays a gig.
