The leading cause of death in the U.S. is coronary heart disease, and the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. is stroke. It is important to know the symptoms of stroke and heart attack so you are prepared to respond quickly.
Heart Attack Symptoms
Heart attack symptoms include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness and breaking out in a cold sweat. Pain may also be experienced in the jaw, back, neck, stomach or in one or both arms.
Stroke Symptoms
Stroke symptoms include weakness of arm, leg or face, especially on just one side of the body. Other symptoms include difficulty understanding or speaking, difficulty walking or seeing or a severe headache that comes on suddenly without a known cause.
Considerations
If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention. Symptoms may be mild, and they may come and go. Women in particular may have heart attacks without experiencing crushing chest pain.
Prevention/Solution
Your best defense again stroke and heart attack is committing to a heart-healthy lifestyle. This includes avoiding smoking, staying active and choosing healthy foods, such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains.

If you experience symptoms of a stroke or heart attack, do not attempt to drive yourself to the hospital. Dial 911 immediately. Every second counts because strokes and heart attacks are life-threatening emergencies.
